When I left the hospital with my first baby I knew it wouldn’t come with a manual, but I didn’t think receiving a bag crammed with pamphlets and samples of generic branded baby lotions were going to really help me either – but this is exactly what happened each time I had baby right here in Australia!

For 75 years in Finland however, mothers actually get given something quite different and special. Would you believe me if I told you it was a cardboard box?

It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1930s way back when Finland’s infant mortality was high – 65 out of 1,000 babies died. This cardboard box or ‘Baby Box’ contains a number of baby products such as clothes and nappies so mothers had the essentials to look after a baby. However the real purpose of the cardboard box, when coupled with the mattress supplied, is to provide a safe sleeping environment for the baby.

The Finns are undeniably proud of their baby boxes because they are based on a providing a foundation to promote safe sleeping and the well being of babies and their mothers so it’s great to see that we now have this box available here in Australia too.

Tuutu was founded by two Finnish Mums living in Australia called Laura and Susanna. It was their dream to bring their beloved tradition of the Baby Box to their new country as they knew something more than a few pamphlets and baby product samples were needed to help give babies the best start to life. This is why they created  Tuutu – a Baby Box containing natural and organic products catered for the Australian climate. So instead of finding thick baby sleep wear you will find sleeveless organic cotton onesies which are better suited for Aussie babies.

The products have been carefully selected based on quality, sustainability and providing a cost effective way to get the most out of baby essentials. For example, the cloth nappy can be used for swimming as well and the baby balm also doubles as a lip balm. The bamboo wraps are not just used for swaddling but also as a nursing cover too. The Baby Box can be used afterwards for toy storage and I’ve also used the lid as a change table.

There are different product packs you can choose and mine included well known and trusted brands such as Purebaby, Gaia, Bubba Blue and Water Wipes. Discount vouchers are also in the Baby Box and mine included a free sleep consultation! You definitely get more value with the Baby Box as opposed to buying all the products and obtaining the services individually. You can find a list of the products, baby box packages and prices on their website here.

Remember to sign up to their newsletter to get 20% off and there is also free delivery within Australia.

As you can see, Marnie just loves her box!
