Dear Nyla – 1 month
This is the first of the monthly letters I’ll write to you to document your first year. Because I’ve been through the baby stage with your sister, I know it goes oh so quickly in a flash – yet so many momentous milestones are made. So I know how important it is to share these moments with you before I forget the details and everything becomes a massive blur.
Your first month has flown by – yet it seems so long ago that you were in hospital – when I was staring down at you through the clear sides of the incubator and hearing the constant beeping from the monitor. Since then you have mastered breastfeeding (even though it was painstaking difficult during the first few weeks), battled a cold you caught from your sister, succeeded with taking expressed milk from the bottle, and going through the daily grind of the many cycles of feeding, pooing, weeing, and sleeping.
During those cycles there are short moments where we both exchange gazes, me of immeasurable happiness and you of complete satisfaction. On the whole you seem to be a pretty chilled out, calm and contented – less grumpy than your sister.
You are pretty alert, especially at 4.30 am in the morning. We have nicknamed you the ‘Night Owl’, as you sleep mostly during the day and wide awake when the sun goes down. You much rather fall asleep in our arms (being cradled and rocked) than your bassinet and rocker – you know all the things you are supposed to sleep in – but luckily your parents are okay with spoiling you for now.
You have reminded me that witnessing the first month of new life is such a wonderful and special experience. I am so blessed to be a mother to a newborn again. I can’t wait to see what the next month and year brings…
Love your Mummy
